Permanent weight loss – really!

Yesterday a friend reminded me it’s the season of “6 weeks to a bikini body” once again.

I  laughed, because a bikini is not what I wear to the beach. But I soon discovered that it’s also the title of a newly released book. The subject of weight loss is clearly not a laughing matter for many people!

But some have seen beyond that. I read this arresting quote from the site MindBodyGreen: “My desire to be happy is greater than my desire to be thin….At the end of the day, the enemy is not sugar, juice cleanses or Facebook. The enemy is our minds.”

As the MindBodyGreen article suggests, perhaps the time has come for a new approach to a healthier weight – beginning with reviewing how we think about ourselves.  Interestingly, The London Daily Mail reported on a German study that went a step further and concluded that praying helps people stay in control of their emotions and behavior.

“These results are consistent with and contribute to a growing body of work attesting to the beneficial effects of praying on self-control”, the psychologists at Saarland University and the University of Mannheim, found.

So how about weight loss that includes a commitment to regular prayer?

In the Huffington Post Healthy Living section, I found an example of this in an article “One Man’s Journey from Obesity and Diabetes to Health”.  The author wrote: “More health professionals are acknowledging the necessity of mental changes, not just physical ones.”

Adding that “one of the best thought-changers is prayer” she quotes a man who managed not only to lose 70 pounds through applying prayer but also to permanently change his lifestyle, resulting in freedom from diabetes. He said: “It wasn’t about being willful.  I prayed to God to have the strength and wisdom to make changes and follow through on them.”

A book that highlights and explains Biblical principles of prayer, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, also includes a final chapter of letters from readers healed by what they learned.  One writes: “Paul said, ‘Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind’…Many times I have been enabled to turn to God, to know it was His will to help in trouble, and obtained the needed benefit.”

These ideas can help us look forward to being happy and gaining a healthy weight in time for the beach in 6 weeks, or anytime!

I love this take on weight loss, prayer works for SO many things, but I never thought to apply it to something so apparently “mundane”. Thanks for sharing Linda!
